Amino Acid Therapy

What is Amino Acid Therapy?

If your diet or condition restricts you getting the number of amino acids you need from your food, supplementing with amino acid therapy becomes a valuable treatment as being unable to get these amino acids can impact your mental and emotional health. Therapy could include a mixture of nutrition changes, oral supplements and IV therapies.

What are amino acids? Your amino acids are the basic building blocks your body uses to build proteins, such as muscle and other tissue, they also serve as precursors to neurotransmitters, the chemicals in the brain that control our thoughts, emotions, memory, energy, movement, sensation and more.

Humans utilize 20 amino acids and 9 of those are “essential” because we can’t synthesize them and they must be obtained from our diet. When we eat protein rich foods our body breaks down and absorbs these small amino acids.

How does it work?

Using specialized lab tests to sample your urine and blood, we evaluate the levels of amino acids in your body. Based on those results and your symptoms, we determine an individualized treatment plan.

If your body can absorb protein effectively from food, our doctors will recommend that you make changes to your diet to increase the amount of protein you eat, ensuring you receive proper levels of essential amino acids.

If this isn’t a viable option for you, due to illness or stress, we will determine a treatment plan for you that will involve a combination of oral supplements and IV therapy.

What conditions does it treat?

There are several health conditions that are associated with amino acid deficiencies and imbalances so this is not an exhaustive list but it does include depression, anxiety, insomnia, ADHD, memory loss, weight gain, muscle loss, binge eating, addiction, and chronic fatigue.

What can I expect during a treatment?

Depending on the treatment path that your doctor chooses for you, you can expect a change to your diet and nutrition or a combination of oral supplements and amino acid IV supplements.

Amino acid therapy can be used alongside traditional medicines to increase the benefit you’re feeling.

How many sessions are needed?

The number of sessions or period of time that will be needed to complete your amino acid therapy is dependent on your levels of amino acid in your body and what method is chosen to correct it.
